At 5, I’d steal my older sister’s Purple Rain CD and be in a complete trance while listening to the Purple One’s melodies, guitar riffs, and sexual lyrics. I had never heard anything like that before. Imagine a 5 year old bodyrolling to “Darling Nikki”. Not ideal for parents, but I was hooked. Little did I know that this would open my admiration and love for not only his music, but the artistry of Prince.
So you can imagine the anxiety I experienced when Prince announced his ‘Hit and Run’ tour. In typical Prince style, he announces the date and city a couple days prior to the actual show. This past April 5 – Easter Sunday to be exact, Christ had risen and Prince announced he was performing in Detroit, MI and I was going to be there no matter what. After what seemed like hell to see him, I went and it was amazing (insert praying hand emoji)!
So good people, if you are fortunate to see Prince ‘hit and run’ your city, here are my five tips you should know before going.
Surviving the Hell that Is Ticketmaster
As the clock struck noon a few, I went on Ticketmaster to see that the show was sold out. DREAMS CRUSHED. As in the case with Ticketmaster, I knew to hit the refresh button to hopefully see that tickets were still available. After hit the refresh button like 2645412145126487423 times, I was able to snag two tickets.
Make it Through Inclement Weather
My boyfriend and I traveled for three hours to Detroit, MI, with clear skies, to reach the Fox Theater. Waiting in line, it began to pour and then monsoon. Girls who got dolled up to see Prince now had limp hair, wet feet, makeup smeared faces, and 100% chance of a cold. Rain, sleet, snow, tornado or volcanic eruption, you must prepare yourself when going to these concerts. Bring a poncho, wear boots and invest in waterproof makeup to see the Purple One.

No Phones Allowed
I cannot be away from my cell phone longer than 20 minutes and I’m being generous. When Prince’s peeps announced no phones allowed at all, I wanted to cry. People were being kicked out for just having their phones out. Beware; Prince doesn’t like you to record his majesty.
Dance like No One Is Watching
How many people can say they witnessed Prince DJ? Not many! He threw it down, playing some of his best dance tracks while the house lights were off. No one could stop dancing throughout the show. It was a funky pop danceathon for three plus hours. Needless to say, I burned off the calories I gained when I inhaled two Chicago style hot dogs before the show and had achy body parts for the rest of the night and into Friday. It was all worth it!
Prepare for the Ultimate Religious Experience
Prince is a God. This isn’t up for debate. We were blessed to be in the congregation of his temple to receive his sermon. He opened the show with “Dearly beloved we are gathered here to get through this thing called life,” and nearly everyone including me, caught the Holy Ghost. Be warned that when receiving the Word according to Prince, your life will change. The most prolific part of the show (which is hard to narrow down after 5 encores) was during the performance of “Purple Rain”. I came full circle, from the 5 year old discovering his music to an adult who is a music lover/ journalist watching the man who guided me here. It was a truly a religious experience!
